Our new semester theme is “Deep & Wide.”
“As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice,… They are like someone building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock.”
If to dig deep into Christ is to get in on his words and ways, then to go deep is to go wide with Jesus. We struggle to do both. We often want our gospel to be a well. Deep, but enclosed and protected, so we can open it and lower our buckets into its depths whenever we feel thirsty. But it seems the Gospel is more like the ocean than like a well. If we dare to go out to the open sea, we will find there’s much deeper waters far away from the shores of our comfort. It’s scarier and riskier, for sure. But it’s deeper and richer. It brings us further into the fullness of Christ. Jesus had arms open wide to embrace, and walked far and wide to reach.
“I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.” (Ephesians 3.17-18)
